Design innovation and cultural empowerment have become key breakthroughs for enhancing the value chain of ceramic lighting. For instance, the "Wealth on Horseback" (*Ma Shang You Qian*) ceramic lamp-designed by Fang Zhenpeng, a visiting professor at the Academy of Arts & Design, Tsinghua University-draws inspiration from Tang Dynasty *sancai* (three-color glazed) horses. By blending Chinese zodiac culture with auspicious symbolism, the lamp garnered significant attention during the "Guangdong Goods Go Global" campaign.
Ceramic lighting products that incorporate elements of traditional Chinese culture can command a "cultural premium" in overseas markets. Enterprises are enhancing the cultural depth and value of their products by integrating these traditional elements into their research and development processes.
At the industry level, initiatives such as design competitions are driving deep integration. For example, Chaozhou City hosted a ceramic lighting innovation design competition; led by industrial design principles and leveraging the region's deep-rooted ceramic industry heritage, the event aimed to foster the profound integration of the ceramic and lighting sectors. The competition received and shortlisted 138 valid entries, spanning both product design and conceptual design.
These innovative works often deeply integrate traditional craftsmanship with modern technology and diverse materials. Examples include the "Nine Dragons Playing with a Pearl" luminous ceramic lamp, which utilizes translucent relief ceramic techniques; the "Concentric Circles" lamp, featuring Chaozhou openwork (*tonghua*) porcelain craftsmanship; and the "Chaozhou Grand Gong and Drum" piece, which combines ceramic lighting with Bluetooth speaker functionality. Industry practices also actively explore innovative combinations-pairing traditional techniques like Chaozhou openwork porcelain, relief carving, and kiln-transmutation glazes with materials such as 3D-printed components, solid wood, and stone-effect finishes-while drawing themes from traditional cultural symbols, natural elements, and modern functional needs.
Ceramic ambient lighting designs based on concepts of "slow living" and "healing" represent a future trend. Guided by the philosophy of a healing, slow-paced lifestyle, designers are exploring how the lighting effects and expressive qualities of ceramic lamps can evoke a sense of well-being; they frequently focus on creating nightlights with rich lighting characteristics, centering their designs on themes such as natural elements.
